This month we’re screening the award winning Canadian film Riceboy Sleeps. Written, produced, edited, and directed by Anthony Shim.
Riceboy Sleeps is a coming of age film that tells the story of a young Korean single mother, So-Young (Choi Seung-yoon), raising her son, Dong-Hyun (Ethan Hwang) in the Canadian suburbs in the 1990s. Both So-Young and Dong-Hyun grapple with the complications of creating a new home in Canada, but the film highlights that no matter how a family’s bonds might be strained and tested, they never break.
